We will be holding this event virtually.
2050 is only 30 years away, and if the Green Deal vision is to work, just about every aspect of our lives, from what we drive to how we heat our homes and where we holiday will be deeply affected.
The EU has already shown its bid for climate leadership and has put forward a lot of important policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The executive body recently revealed its climate law setting up a pathway to climate neutrality by mid-century. The proposal received mixed views, with some countries and green campaigners arguing that the bloc isn’t on a path for climate neutrality unless it dramatically hikes its 2030 emissions reduction target. While some companies welcomed the proposal as a significant step forward in achieving investor confidence, others are worried that if the EU goes it alone, it will lose competitiveness to China and to the U.S.
Achieving climate neutrality won’t be possible without absorbing emissions that simply can’t get cut – adding a big technological challenge.
As EU leaders gather on June 18 for a crucial summit on climate and before Germany takes over the rotating presidency of the EU, this POLITICO event convenes a high-level discussion with European policymakers, international experts and business representatives to discuss the pathway to climate neutrality by 2050.
Key questions to be addressed include:
- How far is the EU from reaching climate neutrality? What are the crucial steps needed to hit that mid-century goal?
- Which countries are ahead of the curve? Where is more action needed?
- How much will it cost to have a carbon neutral Continent by 2050? How can the EU accelerate investments in low carbon technologies?
- Does industry need more regulations or more incentives? What’s the right approach?
- What’s the role of global climate diplomacy in pushing the EU to boost its climate ambitions?
- Does the EU’s 2050 goal put it out of step with big trading partners like the U.S. and China, and does that risk inflaming trade tensions?
