The race is now on to shield the bloc from another energy crisis next winter. It’s this context that has given renewed urgency to a redesign of the EU’s power market to reduce energy prices in the longer-term and decarbonize Europe’s energy systems.
Questions to be addressed include:
- What is the most glaring issue with the wholesale electricity market today?
- To what extent has the energy crisis tied to the war in Ukraine shown that the market needs a deep reform?
- What are the possible risks to investment in clean energies amid further reforms of the market?
- The European Commission has previously shown interest in expanding the use of CFDs and PPAs in the reform, what are the benefits and risks involved there?
- What role should the EU’s physical electricity infrastructure play in this legislation — should more be done on this front?
In view of the Commission’s reform on the EU’s wholesale electricity market expected on March 16, POLITICO convenes policymakers and energy experts to discuss the role of the power market in the context of the current energy crisis.
